This Conservative Government just voted against cutting energy bills and saving households money.
Right now people up and down this country are working hard, paying more, but getting less. People are bearing the brunt of this Tory-made cost of living crisis, but the UK Government has turned its back on them.
Today, the Labour Party forced a vote to introduce our plan for a windfall tax on huge oil and gas profits that would cut energy bills and save households money. I’m proud to have voted for it on behalf of Cardiff North.
It was also an opportunity for Conservative MPs to make their voices heard and finally do the right thing. They failed miserably and they should be ashamed.
Families are choosing between heating and eating. Pensioners are being left behind. Nurses in Cardiff North who put their lives on the line during the pandemic are visiting food banks to survive.
Instead of stepping up and helping people, the UK Government landed a tax hike on working people. Instead of holding an emergency budget to curb the cost of living crisis, ministers mocked and joked at the prospect. Instead of supporting families struggling to make ends meet, ministers told them to just get better jobs.
Labour is on the side of working people. Cardiff North deserves better and I will continue working with my Labour colleagues to stand up against this out-of-touch Conservative Government.
