Update: Pontprennau River Pollution

August 28, 2018

I was recently contacted by a resident in Pontprennau who reported that rubbish bags from the St Edeyrns Persimmon Homes development site had been found in the local river and on the riverbank after people had removed them. Among other rubbish, the bags contained thousands of small polystyrene pieces that have contaminated the area, with three truckloads of rubbish being collected by Cardiff Rivers Group volunteers and local residents. Thank... you to everyone who took the time to do this, you shouldn’t have to, and it’s a testament to the community.

I have contacted Persimmon Homes but so far they have failed to respond to numerous phone calls, letters and emails. I have also reported the incident to Natural Resources Wales who have agreed to look into what further action can be taken at their next enforcement panel in September. Ultimately there needs to be robust security measures in place to prevent access to the rubbish on the site and stop it happening again.

In the meantime, I want to remain vigilant. I’m staying in contact with local residents for updates and if you have any information then I would welcome hearing from you at anna.mcmorrin.mp@parliament.uk
