Statement: Military Detention of Palestinian Children by Israeli Authorities.

March 2, 2018

I signed on to the Military Detention of Palestinian Children by Israeli Authorities Early Day Motion without hesitation, along with many of my Labour colleagues.

My colleagues and I are appalled at Israel’s application of civilian criminal law to Palestinian children. We will not stand for such a disgraceful breach of both international human rights law and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Labour Party’s dedication to protecting international human rights will not waiver, as we strive to reveal and remedy the systemic abuse of Palestinian children in custody by Israeli authorities.

We must put a stop to this cycle of mistreatment that threatens the likelihood of a peaceful and stable future for all children in the region. I am sure that you will join me in demanding that members of this Tory Government stop trying to divert attention away from the Israeli authorities’ blatant abuses and that they hear our plea for newfound empathy and urgency.

You are correct to say that the duty to protect the rights of children is on all of us. I will continue press the Government to hold the Israeli Government accountable for violating international human rights law until we see that no more Palestinian children are abused.
