Press Release: Anna McMorrin MP raises concerns about PIP

January 31, 2018

Anna McMorrin, MP for Cardiff North, was among several Labour MPs who demanded that the Government acts to address concerns about the treatment of Personal Independence claimants, amid worries that the upcoming review will bring a fresh wave of nightmare stories.

This week, Debbie Abrahams MP, Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, commenting on the Government’s admission that every disabled person receiving a Personal Independence Payment will have their claim reviewed, said:

“Today’s admission that the Department will have to reconsider 1.6 million PIP claims to ensure that all claimants receive the correct award is shocking.

“The Disabilities Minister has refused to publish a timetable of how many months or even years it will take for this “complex exercise” to be completed.

Anna McMorrin, MP for Cardiff North says: “I was never a fan of the new Personal Independence Payment, and neither where my constituents. We have all heard our fair share of nightmare stories from up and down this country. We have heard reports of people who are unable to walk or have no legs at all, being assessed as being able to walk 20 meters. People who died before the refusal letter arrived at their door, to let them know that they were simply not sick enough to receive benefits. Suicidal people, suffering from mental health problems, being asked at the assessment how come they haven’t killed themselves yet, if as they claim they are so suicidal? “

Speaking in Parliament, today, Anna McMorrin said: “One of my own constituent’s last resolve was turning to me. He was terminally ill, and he was told by DWP that he would only be eligible for PIP in two months’ time when he only had weeks to live! His partner was distraught, he was distraught. He wanted to use that money for the last few weeks of this life. It turned out it was due to an administrative error. They had to come to me to short that out, as their last option. This is disgraceful. “
