Anna McMorrin MP launches #AnnaMPQs with primary school students in Cardiff North

Anna McMorrin MP has launched a series of online chats with primary school students in her constituency of Cardiff North called #AnnaMPQs. The first to take part was Gabalfa Primary School who brought together pupils from a mixture of year groups to speak to Anna via video call.

#AnnaMPQs is a great way for students to use digital technology to feel more involved with democracy. The Cardiff North MP and teachers are working together to incorporate the series into the recently launched Welsh Government Digital Competence Framework. The new curriculum in Wales aims to give students the skills that will help learners thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Anna McMorrin MP says, “I was delighted to chat to pupils from Gabalfa Primary School. They had some great questions about inspiring Labour women, what I like about being an MP, and the difference between the Welsh Government and the UK Government.

Although I always encourage schools in Cardiff North to visit me in Parliament, it’s not always feasible and can take a lot of time for teachers to organise. #AnnaMPQs allows me to chat with students while I’m in Westminster so I can show them where I work, and they can ask me about being a Member of Parliament.

It’s important to engage young people in politics and the mechanisms of governance so they can feel part of our democracy and be inspired to take part now and in the future. I’m looking forward to rolling this out to all the primary schools in Cardiff North.”

Mrs Jenkins, Headteacher for Gabalfa Primary School says, “#AnnaMPQs has been a great success. The Ladder Committee, a panel of students from all year groups, were very excited and have been planning what questions they would like to ask Anna all week.

The children and I really enjoyed it and afterwards one of the students bucked up the courage to tell me about an issue she wanted to discuss because of the inspiration of the meeting!”
